Tangled Woods

A vast forest range that butts up against the Narrow Sea, the Tangled Wood is a truly ancient place. Sprawling for hundreds of miles over a range of steep sided, craggy hills, this untouched wilderness boasts trees of great age and size. Great thickets of brambles hinder exploration of the interior; these completely untouched portions of wilderness boast trees of great age and size. Mighty oaks, hornbeams and grey-brown barked elms all grow here in profusion, interspersed with box elder and holly and occasional stands of birches, pines and willows. Many small streams and brooks wend their way through the murk.

The Wood, it is whispered in the villages, knows it’s own, and protects them. Outsiders; those not known by the Wood, are said to be lucky if they return from a trip into the Wood unscathed. Whole caravans have been known to disappear into the Wood, which swallows them up and never relinquishes them. In the villages, they say that the Wise know how to satiate the Wood so that one may travel safely through its bounds.

In smaller villages, it is whispered, newborn children are taken by their parents a short way into the Tangled Wood, where all three are ritually scarred, and gifts of their blood are made to the forest.
